Basic Lock Security

  1. Consider changing all outside door locks when you move home.
  2. Fit a BS 3621:2007 mortise lock to the front door these high security lock suitable for external applications, particularly front and back door. Certified to BS 3621:2007 as required by some house insurance policies and recommended by the police.
  3. Fit a 5-lever BS3621 mortise lock together with top- and bottom-operated bolts to side and back doors
  4. Fit appropriate locks to the top and bottom of French windows and patio doors
  5. Fit window locks to ground floor and upstairs windows
  6. Don't leave door keys in visible or obvious places such as under the doormat
  7. Lock all your doors and windows when you go out
  8. Don't leave ladders lying around
  9. Keep your sheds and outbuildings locked; burglars will use YOUR tools to gain access to YOUR house
  10. Close your curtains and leave a light on in the lounge and bedroom if you are going out for the evening
  11. Always activate your intruder alarm before you go out – many insurance companies will refuse to pay out if you are burgled and you did not activate an alarm
  12. Don't leave curtains and blinds drawn during the day – they will attract burglar

Basic alarm systems

Most simple alarm systems include:
